HEEFA Capacity Building Session

A round of applause

The very first IAU capacity building session entitled Envisaging a global initiative locally, was a resounding success! Over 100 invited participants exchanged ideas on how to reinforce higher education involvement in local EFA-related activities. It ended with the adoption of the Cuernavaca Declaration which recognized the importance of EFA and the need to implicate higher education in EFA activities. Linked to EFA priorities identified during the session, several committees were also established with the mandate to map out the steps to concretely draw in higher education in EFA movement.

Among the participants, 16 higher education institutions were represented, along with members from the local and national governmental education bodies, UNESCO, local NGOs, schools and students. The session was designed around three rotating workshops linked to university’s three missions – research; teaching and learning; community – and included a presentation on HEEFA.

HEEFA extends a big congratulations to all participants and to the Universidad autonoma del Estado de Morelos and the local NGO, Red de Cooperación Interinstitucional for their support in organising this event.

Held in Spanish, this first capacity building served as a pilot for the next session, soon to follow in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, 8-9 July. The second session is being organised in cooperation with the University of Ouagadougou and The Ministry of Basic Education.
