IAU extends its deepest condolences to all who have lost family members and friends in wake of Haiti’s tragedy. We offer our moral support and are exploring ways in which IAU may be useful in the long-term rebuilding effort.
 
I News on the HEEFA Portal
 
HEEFA in French
The French version of HEEFA is undergoing the last development phase. For the moment use only the English version to enter data (data can be entered irrespectively in English or French) and select “language neutral” to have your project/expertise available in both versions when both versions will be available.
 
The big kick-off of the bilingual HEEFA is in April. So get ready!

Innovative capacity building session
The third outcome of the IAU Project to better involve higher education in EFA, the first capacity building session, will take place in May 2010. It is being co-organised with the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Morelos in Cuernavaca, México. During the session, the portal will be tested and fed by participants. Projects from Guatemala, Ghana and Russia
EDUMAYA, developed by the Universidad Rafael Landivar, raises awareness of indigenous languages and culture in Guatemala and fosters inclusive education at all levels and sectors of education.
The Reducing HIV Stigma initiative brings together three major universities in Ghana to work with the Simon Fraser University in Canada to strengthen institutional capacity in preparing teachers and community youth workers to better cope with the spread and stigma of HIV/AIDS.
The Moscow Institute of Open Education was awarded the 2009 UNESCO King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa for the use of ICT in Education in recognition of developing and delivering to over 30,000 teachers annually in-service programmes to include ICT in their classroom, as well as textbooks and teacher guide-books used widely in the Russian Federation and other countries.
 
Meet some women experts
Neerja Sharma, an expert in early childhood development, has been instrumental in developing the outreach services at the Lady Irwin College, University of Delhi in India and addressing special training needs for children and youth with disabilities. Justine Martin, affiliated with the Université-Paris IV in France, researches issues touching inclusive education and the links between poverty and educational policy. Jana Bacevic, from the Centre of Research Policy in Serbia, has been active in renovating education in post-conflict Serbia and Kosovo, with a particular focus on minority populations.

Calls of Proposals
Academics are invited to submit proposals for the European Early Childhood Education Research Association annual conference to be held in September 2010. This year’s theme is Knowledge and Voice in Early Childhood. Deadline: 22 February 2010
The 2011 EFA Global Monitoring Report on education and violence invites suggestions, existing evidence-based research, evaluation studies, and sources for data on education. Open consultation: 2-28 February
The International Association for Research on Service-learning and Community Engagement invites proposals for its Annual Conference, slated for Fall 2010, to share experiences and findings on how outreach is similar or different in varied contexts worldwide. Deadline: 22nd March 2010

The Portal of the Latin American and Caribbean Higher Education Area (Espacio de Encuentro Latinamericano and Caribeno de Educación Superior, ENLACES) to foster regional integration and academic cooperation went live (in Spanish)
The Global University Network for Innovation invites papers for its 5th International Conference centred on the theme of Higher Education’s Commitment to Sustainability: from Understanding to Action. Deadline: 31 May 2010
The 2010 EFA Global Monitoring Report on Reaching the Marginalized, launched on 19 January, warned that an “entire generation could be lost” if concerted efforts in financing Education For All are not maintained and reinforced.
